Photojournalism Ethics

Should a photojournalists ethics be absolute or situational? Why?
Situational, because of the surrounding and the certain picture being taken.
Sometimes our ethical beliefs are put aside to show or take a picture of something,
that might be important to another.

Can a photo really capture truth? Why or why not?

Photos usually capture some truth. Not all pictures are legit, only because now
we have the tools to alter pictures and add things that weren't there to begin with.

What decisions have you made as a photographer that "edit" reality? Explain.
Sometimes i have to "edit" reality, when i see something i don't like and
either want out or to be altered to look better.

Why is it important that news organizations have clearly defined ethical standards?
Because someone could get hurt, though usually the news doesn't care
because news is news and money is money.
BUT they cant show or write life threatening things in the news. Plus, these
standards are lines that help photographers or journalists know where there limits
are.

Bobby, Kate, and Christoph, take a adventurous ride through the Bermuda triangle, in late October. They are ghost hunters who can take on anything, but the vicious waves of the ocean.

Panda Manda!

Tie-yo Shu, a local motorcyclist, rides a panda while attempting to do a turn, which caused him to have a fatal accident. Shu has mental problems and usually mistakes playground rides for real cars.

Poop anyone?

Kayguy Magami runs away from the pigeon's feces bombs at a local park. Magami, who is allergic to bird feces, cried out because each attack of feces felt like needles .

Doe-Eyed- rep.

"Lisa Simpson appears on television screens on a new Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 after its inaugural passenger flight from Singapore to Sydney, Australia."
The repetition of the seats and of the cartoon/figure on every screen in back of the seats, leads your eyes to the front of the plane.

Is This Seat Taken?-rep.

"A deputy waits before French President Nicolas Sarkozy's speech to members of the ruling party UMP (Union for a Popular Movement) at the Elysée Palace."
The chairs are all the same and they are being repeated and are leading towards the deputy.

Ready for the Future- rep.

"Malaysians in costume march in a parade commemorating 50 years of independence in Kuala Lumpur."
It's a repetition of uniform, which the helmets lead you to the corner of the picture.

sugarhill

A. What skills in addition to photography did Melanie Burford utilize to produce this slideshow?
The skill to get closer to a stranger, knowing what images will reach your heart

B. What was the effect (added power or meaning) of the multimedia effects of the slideshow.
It was the music and the voices of the people. I can feel the pain as the lady died, and the family cried over her lifeless body.

3 . What is the most interesting multimedia effect?
The video was the most intresting because you have someone who lives in sugarhill telling you his perspective of it.

classroom photography!

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close, capture real moments, and capture action or emotion? How did you deal with these? I tried my best, it was hard because the students knew i was there and some felt uncomfortable. Though they didn't say they were uncomfortable, it showed. I tried just taking pictures when they didn't expect it.

2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most, and how did you make sure you did these correctly? I thought more about the focus, because of the movement of the students and because of my desired main focus in the picture, i didn't want it to be out of focus.

3. Describe how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques when you shot. I tried to put the students in the rule of thirds, then balance and i tried to avoid merges.. I'm not sure if i succeeded, but hopefully i did.

The Rule of Thirds

The man is on the lower level third on the right side. By being there you focus on him. Your eyes drift to him in the picture because of the rule of thirds. It's hard not to notice the man in the corner.

Avoiding Mergers

the two shadows crossing each other is a merger.. if they didn't then that would be avoiding mergers.
To avoid a merger is to not have the same of something or have something looking like its attached to the person(s) or object(s) you desire to take a picture of.

Balance

The woman is in center and her arms are extended vertically forming a triangle shape when the visible lines are attached from hand to hand to joints. It gives more passion.

Framing

The frame is on all 4 sides. It gets the viewer to focus on the action/event in the center of the picture.

Lines

The men on the upper part of the picture are forming vertical lines as to form a triangle. These lines lead you to the man in the center, to the desired place of the photographer.

JJ's neg.

I want 16 and 13

FiLL tHe FRamE

The trumpet fills the frame.
The closeness of the instrument. It gives great focus on the instrument, though not
on the person, it makes it even more interesting.

ACTion & EMOtion

The action is in the flaming ribbons.
The emotion is coming from the guys.
They're excited.
They made and explosion of fire and it brings
adrenalin to their systems.

ThE StOrY

This picture tells the story of time.
Time will pass us by fast, but we will
slow it down to do what we need to do.
Everyone is speeding through life, but the
girl holds on.
She wont let go.
Others are having fun and wanting the grape
of time to wrinkle a little.
She sits still, writing, getting work done.
She shows how you must appreciate
time and do what needs to be done.

ATPI contest

  • Robert Baker
  • First Place-Adv BW Landscape
  • 2003 Fall Contest
  • The Kinkaid School - Houston, TX

To me It feels lonely because of the black and white contrast.

The dead plants make it sad and lifeless.

Great lighting which gives the snow a great lighting to it (brightness).

The composition is great!

The landscaping is wide and far in range. You have the chance to see what surrounds the fence and dying tree.

My favorite pic!!!

The balloons are falling to their end. All joyful colors and all full of air. One by one will fall to feel a sting, none will survive the needle of death.

This picture neither has a blur or is out of focus.
I liked this picture, because of the way the light is captured on the ocean. It's reflection is beautiful. The people add a story of friendship that will be fulfilling.

The Camera

A pinhole camera and an SLR camera both project an image to the required object of which the image is desired on. They both have a shutter, but one is manually shut and the other can be adjusted before hand, so not to bother with over/under exposed images.
The SLR has lenses which let you adjust and focus on the object. Which help you have a less chance of getting a over/under exposed image, which the pinhole camera doesnt allow. The pinhole camera has many disadvantages. There's no focus lense, shutter counter, or f-stops.
